The Management Information System (MIS) is a computer-based Information system which is an integration of man and machine and is based on the large volume of data to provide information for the people in the organization. This information helps in the decision making process of the organization. Management Information System started before five decades, but still serves multiple organizations around the globe without becoming redundant. Present status of MIS
Initially there was a basic doubt that whether the MIS is to be categorized as Software or hardware. But the early evolution clearly showed that the Management Information System is indeed Software with no attributes of hardware to it. At present the adaptability of MIS is under question in certain industrial applications. But time and again, MIS is evolving by itself to stay relevant till date. With the computer literacy of users and the public in general remaining very high, MIS is foraying into new avenues.
Business applications of MIS
The Enterprise Resource Planning application is a form of Management Information System, and is now more prevalent than that of MIS at present. With the globalization, companies are diversifying their presence and work. So the need to manage information from various locations is very high. MIS serves this purpose effectively. Networking is another attribute of MIS, another reason for its wide usage in business. Electronically transferring data both within a company and between companies makes the company to use MIS.
Modified forms of MIS presence
The Management Information System being used for the first time in1960s has undergone multiple changes and updates. Some of these evolutionary forms are so much modified, that they are not accepted as MIS in general. The most widely used form of MIS at present is ERP. Enterprise Resource Planning is an in-house application present in all the internal systems to maintain the workflow and maintain the master data. The other form of MIS is Executive Information System (EIS) catering to the topmost executives of the organization. MIS is generally considered suitable for mid-level players like managers.
Futuristic predictions of MIS
The basic function of MIS is to sort out and make the available data into useful information. With the big data and data mining, the MIS has got a whole new platform. With the MIS being widespread and its ease of access, more and more are opting for MIS. This has led to a new avenue for education. The employees can remain updated in their field and that of college authorities is also encouraging to keep their students, and future employees.
The Management Information System is basically a complex decision making application. With the advent of Information and Technical revolution MIS has greater relevance. The integration of financial information further improves the usage of MIS. Thus the MIS is nowhere near extinction. It will instead evolve in future to suit the changing needs.
